Unlimited Plan

As you can see, both the Precedent and the Merit require the Straight Talk Unlimited plan. That said, the ZTE Merit is a GSM device while the Prescedent is CDMA. This may or may not be a big deal depending on your area. If you have better GSM coverage, then the ZTE would be the device to get. On the other hand, if you have better CDMA coverage, then the Precedent is the device for you. Chances are that the Merit uses TMobile while the Precedent uses Sprint. Compare Android Calling Areas

Dimension and Weight

While on paper, the differences are slight. The Merit notacibly thicker than the Precedent. It's also a bit heavier.

Android Operating System

Many review sites love to spout Android version numbers. The fact is, that most people aren't going to notice or really care. Simply put, the Merit uses a newer version than the Precedent. If you're technically inclined, the Precedent can easily be upgraded.

Android Below Screen Buttons

This is one notable difference between the two models. The Merit uses the physical pushbutton variety while the Precedent uses the capacitive touch type. Not a big deal really but the capacitive buttons on the Precedent give it a more modern sleek appearance. While the Merit looks a bit more clunky and outdated. This of course is personal preference. That said, the physical variety are a bit more user friendly as they offer that tactile feel so you can find the buttons without looking at them too closely. The Precedent buttons are also a little more prone to accidental pushes.

Digital Camera

Boiling everything down, this is the biggest difference between the two models. The Merit has a much better camera with its 5 mp resolution while the Precedent only has a 2mp camera so there is a huge difference in terms of picture quality here. On the downside, the Merit does not have a dedicated camera side button.

Conclusion

This one is too close to call. The Precedent offers a more sleek and modern appearance while the ZTE Merit offers a much better camera. Another thing to consider is that the Precedent is CDMA while the Merit is GSM. Not a big deal or difference unless your coverage area offers better coverage on one over the other. One last deciding factor of course is that the Samsung brand carries more brand recognition over the ZTE.
