The Samsung Precedent is Straight Talk's first Android introduction. The Precedent is an entry level device as indicated by it's $150 price tag. As such, it's not the most powerful Android on the market but it's light years ahead of the standard Straight Talk feature phone. With the Precedent, you can finally take full advantage of Straight Talk's $45 unlimited plan at a rather affordable price.

The first thing that strikes us on the Precedent is the rather compact size for an Android. Very refreshing when compared to the enormous Android devices that keep getting bigger and bigger. The Precedent is about the size of an iPhone if not slightly smaller so it carries and stores easily.
Build quality looks and feels excellent. Though the phone is an "entry level" android model, it feels quite solid, not cheap and hollow. The body is all plastic with dark charcoal gray sides, dark charcoal gray textured back and black front. One thing to mention is that the screen is plastic, though it doesn't feel cheap, it's probably a good idea to get a screen protector.
A look around the phone reveals the typical Android format with the usual Menu, Home, Back and Search physical capacitive touch buttons just below the nicely sized 3.2" screen. On the right we find the camera quick launch button. On the left we find the volume toggle and SD card slot. On the top, we find the power/screen lock and head phone jack. On the bottom we find the charge/data cable port. Finally, on the back we find the camera as expected but no flash.
All in all, the Precedent offers a nice and simple package that's intuitive and quite easy to use. We like the SD card being accessible without removing the battery which can be uncommon on the entry level devices. The compact size is a nice departure from the larger Androids that are downright ugly and absurdly over sized.
Usability and Features
The Samsung Precedent is a very capable phone running the Android 2.2 OS with more features than you can shake a stick at. The most notable of course, is the Android App Market so you can finally get your hands on the more popular games/apps such as Angry Birds and the like. Other notable features include GPS functionality via a dedicated Google Navigation app, Google Maps, 3g Data speeds, WiFi connectivity, Netflix, YouTube, Instant messaging, MP3 player, Bluetooth and more. One feature we really liked was the Swipe keyboard. Once mastered, you can really increase your texting speeds. We were extremely surprised and excited to find that the Netflix app worked great on WiFi so that's another huge bonus for us!
One thing to keep in mind is the fact that this is an entry level Android so it has a rather average 600mhz processor. This may limit the number of apps you can run at the same time. On average though, all the of the apps we tested ran great. Netflix for example, played without a hitch. Video was smooth and looked great. You will also need an SD card as the phone has no internal storage. Straight Talk is kind enough to include a 2gb card with the phone so you're set to download apps straight out of the box. Luckily, it supports up to 32gb so expanding is no sweat.
We were really impressed with the responsiveness of the capacitive touchscreen. Touches register quickly and accurately when typing text. Navigating the Android OS is a breeze and the screen responsiveness makes it all the easier. Resolution is good though certainly not the highest for an Android. This phone is a real joy to use!
Overall, the Precedent has an excellent feature set. About the only disappointing thing is the rather low resolution 2 megapixel digital which is about as good as the typical feature phone. Aside from this, the Samsung Precedent is by far the most feature rich phone in the Straight Talk line up.
The Samsung Galaxy Precedent is an excellent yet affordable starter Android. It has all of the desirable traits of your typical Android phone including the Android App Market. This phone will finally allow you to take full advantage of the $45 unlimited plan. Unlike other prepaid companies, there is no "Android" upcharge, making this phone more than worthwhile. Be aware that Straight Talk will not allow the $30 plan to be used with this phone. Finally a great device that makes switching to the Straight Talk savings easy!
