First Impression

If you've seen the Galaxy S series phones, then you know these are some serious devices and if you haven't, then take our word for it. The same goes for the Samsung S959g as it is essentially a Straight Talk version of the Samsung Galaxy S2. We're first struck by the large super bright and crisp 4.5" screen that clearly dominates the design. This screen can be used for some serious viewing, that's for sure! The other thing that catches our eye is the super slim design. Don't get us wrong, this is a rather large device but it is super slim. In fact, it is significantly slimmer than any other Straight Talk Android we've seen to date. With that in mind, you should probably consider another device if the large form factor is not for you. Perhaps the Samsung Proclaim.

On the looks department, this is one great looking phone. Everything about it yells quality. We particularly like the silver metal bezel that surrounds the entire phone. Another slick feature are the capacitive touch buttons just below the screen. These are flush with the screen and are of the touch type so they are seamlessly integrated into the phone.

A quick tour around the phone reveals the typical Andorid layout with the headphone jack, lock button on upper right hand side, charge/data on bottom and volume on right.

Usability and Features

This phone has way to many features to list so we will touch on the main things. First, is the awesome crisp, bright and large 4.5" screen. We watched a few Netflix movies on it and they played without a hitch so we know this phone is not going to have any of the Netflix app issues on the lower devices. Also tried extensive multitasking and the phone performed flawlessly. Remember that this is a 1.2ghz dual core device so it will handle pretty much any app you can throw at it.

Next item on the list was the 8 megapixel digital camera/recorder. We were able to take some quality shots that were just as good as a digital camera. No graininess or anything like that. The front facing camera is only 2 mp so quality is not as great. Overall, we were very pleased with the digital camera. We would venture to say that if you buy this phone, it will probably become your main picture taking device as well.

As with all Androids, you get the Google Play market, GPS, Youtube, mp3 functionality and more. Despite the fact it is prepaid, the phone is not crippled in any way shape or form. Make no mistake, this is a full functioning Galaxy S2 device at a 50% calling plan savings.

Our conclusion is that the Samsung S959g is one powerful device with a beautiful screen. This is a multimedia phone through and through. About the only thing we didn't like about it is the size but this seems to be the trend on Androids. The size is easy to overlook because you get such a great looking screen. Also, the fact that the phone is quite slim is somewhat of a compensating factor. Overall, we definitely recommend you take a look at this device if a high end, high feature device is what you seek.
