Tracfone LG 840g full Review

The LG 840g is a compact square design feature phone for both Straight Talk and Tracfone prepaid plans. Simple and compact 3 button Android like design are the highlights of the LG 840g. This is a GSM device that will use either TMobile or AT&T coverage areas. I guess you could say that this is a new an improved version of the popular LG 800g and comes with the Triple Minutes for Life of the phone plan.

First Impression

The LG 840g is an affordable 3g touchscreen device for use in GSM calling areas. What's notable about this phone is that it welcomes another touchscreen phone for Tracfone and Straight Talk users alike. What's different about this phone is that it uses the more accurate and sensitive capacitive touch variety instead of the older resistive push touch found on older touchscreen Tracfones.

Overall, the LG840g is fairly straight forward feature/touchscreen phone. The squarish design is kind of a cool departure from the typical rectangular/round cornered design. It has a 3 capacitive button layout just below the screen that kind of have the look/feel of an Android device, very much like the LG Optimus Logic. Now keep in mind that the LG 840g is not an Android smartphone. This is a standard feature phone.

Usability and Features

The LG 840g is a very usable device. It's certainly no Android or anything like that but it's got plenty of features for the price. For starters, you get WiFi which is unusual for Tracfone. In fact, only the Samsung S390g offers this feature but that is a full QWERTY device without a touchscreen.

Also included of course, is a built in music player, a pretty good 2 megapixel digital camera, customizable ring tones, good web browsing capabilities and few other features. This phone is also Java app capable so you can install a variety of Java apps like Opera Mini. Overall, this is one of the best touchscreen Tracfone to date that is quite pleasant to use.

On the negative side, the phone does not have a motion sensor so it will not adjust when turned on its side. Additionally, there are some places where the phone does not use the full QWERTY keyboard interface. Places like text entry boxes in the browser for example, still use the old school alpha numeric keyboard type. Fortunately, the url entry can be set to use the Full QWERTY keyboard interface as well as texting interface.

Conclusion

The LG 840g is an excellent featured touchscreen phone. It's quirky square design grew on me so I really liked the phone. I think current and prospective Tracfone users should particularly consider this phone as an excellent replacement to their current feature devices.
